Trauma Q&A

What is trauma?

Trauma is an event that triggers intense physical, emotional, or psychological distress. The experience can be so overwhelming that you’re unable to cope or integrate with life around you in a meaningful way. After a traumatic event, you may struggle with post-traumatic stress disorder, which is characterized by:

  • Mood swings
  • Difficulty focusing
  • Flashbacks
  • Avoidance behavior
  • Irritability
  • Guilt
  • Shame
  • Intrusive thoughts

Though trauma is linked to violence, loss, war, or a serious accident, it can also result from less obvious experiences, like chronic stress, persistent emotional neglect, or ongoing struggles in a meaningful relationship.

What types of trauma are there?

Trauma comes in many forms. You may have experienced one or a combination in the past that continues to impact you to this day. Some examples include:

  • Acute trauma: A single, intense, catastrophic event like a car accident, tornado or hurricane, death of a loved one, or war.
  • Chronic trauma: Ongoing exposure to chronically stressful situations like having an abusive partner, a toxic work environment, or dealing with cancer, diabetes, or another long-term illness.
  • Complex trauma: Repeated trauma over an extended time period, such as domestic violence or manipulation, childhood abuse, or prolonged neglect.

Dr. Hall identifies the type and root cause of trauma you’re experiencing so she can customize a care plan to help you reclaim your quality of life.
